Bookmarks!

Last week, both kindergarten classes made bookmarks during their visits to the library. We talked about the different ways we can take care of books so that they will last a long time and many students will be able to enjoy them in the library. Here are some of the ideas we discussed:

1)      Use a bookmark instead of folding over pages
2)      Keep books in a safe place out of reach of young siblings        and pets
3)      Do not drink or eat while reading books
4)      Keep your library books in the same spot if you bring them
home so you will know where to find them when it is time
     to return them
5)     Turn pages slowly and carefully

Some of the bookmarks have already been sent home with students so they can use them while reading books at home with their family members. The rest of the bookmarks will be sent home tomorrow or next week.

Here are pictures of the bookmarks that have been made already (some students were absent, so their bookmarks will be ready next week):

Scholastic Book Fair, November 2012

We held a Scholastic book fair in our library from November 21-28, 2012. It was my first time running a book fair, so I was very excited about it. I quickly realized there was no way I was going to be able to do it on my own! I was very fortunate to have a number of parents, students, teachers, and other community members generously donate their time to help with the book fair. The efforts of the volunteers made the fair run smoothly and it was a great fundraising success for our school library. Thank you once again to all of those wonderful volunteers!!!

We sold about $2700 worth of books during the fair which meant we received a credit of about $1250 from Scholastic to use towards books for our library. Throughout the book fair, students made suggestions of books from the fair they would like to see in the library. All of the books they suggested will be added to the library along with many more.

We will hold another Scholastic book fair in the library around the same time next year. Hope to see you there as a shopper, volunteer or both!

Here are some pictures of some of the books we got to keep from the fair. See if you can find one that you would enjoy! Also, there will be more books purchased with the credit from Scholastic arriving soon. I'll keep you posted about those through this blog!

First post!

Welcome to the Fairview Community School Library's new blog! I created this blog so we could have a place to share what is happening in our school library. I also created this blog so we could have a place to share our thoughts about our favourite books and authors, talk about what we are reading currently and have a place to access other information related to the joys of reading and learning. I hope you enjoy what you find on this blog. If there is something you would like to see added here, please let me know!
